Sometimes I feel I must be the worst trends blogger ever so, in a new delivery of my truest sincerity here comes another chapter of ‘How do I love boycotting my own trends research, myself’: I have to confess that, even though it was named America’s hippest hipster neighborhood last year by Forbes I only have been to Silver Lake twice since I got to L.A. and one of those two times was actually last Saturday for the party at Mack Sennet Studios I told you about the other day.

The first time was last year, when Paula dragged me there. Although, let’s face it, after a 12 hour flight -plus connections, plus controls, plus queues, plus all that airport hustle and bustle that leaves you looking as an extra in The Walking Dead- from Barcelona to come visit, a 45 minutes drive in the infernal traffic of L.A. is no big deal.

The thing is, whenever I go there, I feel I should come back more often. I really should. It is, indeed, a really cool place where you can always find interesting things going on, inspiring shops like Mohawk General Store o cute places to eat like vegan restaurant Flore. You can also find there The Secret Headquarters (3817 W Sunset Blvd, L.A.) which is the amazing comic store in which we might have spent a couple of hours or so browsing through the pages of their cool selection of comics, books and fanzines.

A veces tengo la sensación de que debo ser la peor bloguera de tendencias de la historia así que, en una nueva muestra de mi más llana sinceridad aquí llega otro episodio de ‘Cómo adoro boicotear, yo misma, mis propias investigaciones de tendencias’: tengo que confesar que, aunque el año pasado fue nombrado por Forbes el vecindario más hipster de todo América yo solo he estado en Silver Lake dos veces desde que llegué a Los Ángeles, y una de esas dos veces fue precisamente el sábado pasado para la fiesta de Mack Sennet Studios de la que os hablaba el otro díá.

La primera vez fue el año pasado, cuando Paula me arrastró hasta allí. Aunque, admitámoslo, tras un vuelo de doce horas -más conexiones, más controles, más colas, más todo el ajetreo aeroportuario que te deja con una cara que ni los extras en The Walking Dead- desde Barcelona para venir a visitarnos, un paseo de 45 minutos entre el infernal tráfico de L.A. no supone mucho problema.

El caso es que, cada vez que voy, tengo la impresión de que debería volver más a menudo. Realmente, debería. Es, efectivamente, un lugar muy cool en el que siempre puedes encontrar cosas interesantes, tiendas inspiradoras como Mohawk General Store o bonitos lugares para comer como el restaurante vegano Flore. También puedes encontrar allí The Secret Headquarters (3817 W Sunset Blvd, L.A.) que es la fantástica tienda de cómics en la que debimos pasar un par de horas hojeando las páginas de su genial selección de cómics, libros y fanzines.

After more than one year in L.A. I still feel like a newcomer; I guess it is a little bit complicated not to feel that way in such a big city, and that is why whenever somebody discovers something new to me I feel so grateful. Last Saturday I had the chance of attending Mack Sennet Studios’ reopening party and it was an amazing experience.

The early days of this already historical venue date from 1916 when it was built as a silent movie studios and, being located in the show city par excellence, you can imagine all the icons that have already walked through its doors: from Charlie Chaplin to David Lynch, including Michael Jackson or Martin Scorsese, to name a few. With all this historical background it was impossible not to feel the great excitement floating in the air during the whole evening.

WIFE performance was another of the amazing surprises that night would bring for us. I had never heard before about this artistic group that mixes acting, music and dancing in such an exciting way. I remained in awe during their whole thrilling appearance and even after that I could not believe how emotional and electrifying it had been. You are probably at this moment looking at my lousy pictures and thinking: Well, yeah… whatever… But I encourage you to enjoy this video called Statuettes which is the same piece that they performed on Saturday.

Después de más de un año en Los Ángeles aún me siento como una recién llegada; aunque supongo que es un poco inevitable en una ciudad tan grande, por eso cada vez que alguien me descubre algo nuevo me siento tan agradecida. El sábado pasado tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la fiesta de reapertura de Mack Sennet Studios y fue una experiencia fantástica.

Los inicios de este -ya histórico- lugar se remontan a 1916 cuando se construyó para ser utilizado como estudios de cine mudo aunque, estando ubicado en la ciudad del espectáculo por excelencia, podéis imaginar todos los iconos que han pasado ya por allí: desde Charlie Chaplin a David Lynch, incluyendo a Michael Jackson o a Martin Scorsese, por nombrar a unos cuantos. Con todo este bagaje histórico era imposible no sentir la emoción flotando en el aire durante toda la noche.

La actuación de WIFE era otra de las grandes sorpresas que nos deparaba la noche. Nunca había oído hablar de este grupo artístico que mezcla teatro, música y danza de una manera tan sorprendente. Permanecí atónita durante toda su espectacular actuación e incluso después no podía creer cuán emocionante y electrizante había sido. Probablemente en este momento estáis mirando mis pésimas fotos y pensando: Buah… sí, lo que tu digas… Pero  os animo a que echéis un vistazo a este vídeo que se llama Statuettes que es la misma pieza que interpretaron el sábado.

Ok, so this is the situation. It is Monday and you don’t feel like doing absolutely nothing because maybe you had an amazing weekend -let’s say maybe you attend to the cool Mack Sennett Studio’s opening party as I did (more about this tomorrow)- and still need time to recover from it or maybe you are in such a busy rush that you can’t find time to have a proper meal today or maybe -how often does this happen?!- you feel like eating but not like cooking.

The solution comes today in the shape of this Sardine Toast with Cherry Tomatoes and Avocado which is exactly as quick, easy and delicious as it sounds. No big secrets here: I slightly toasted the bread and poured some olive oil on it. Sliced the tomatoes and the avocado and laid them on the toast, together with the boneless sardines. I add fresh basil for a perfumed touch and then sprinkled the whole thing with freshly ground black pepper. Easy, easy, easy.

Ok, éste es el panorama. Es lunes y no tienes ganas de hacer nada porque has tenido un fin de semana fantástico -digamos que, por ejemplo, estuviste en la fiesta súper molona de inauguración de los estudios Mack Sennett como nosotros (más sobre esto mañana mismo)- y todavía necesitas algo de tiempo para recuperarte o quizás estás tan frenéticamente ocupado que no tienes ni un momento para una comida decente o quizás -¿y cómo de a menudo ocurre esto?- tienes mucha hambre y pocas ganas de cocinar.

La solución llega hoy en forma de esta Tostada de Sardinas con Tomates Cherry y Aguacate que es exactamente tan rápida, fácil y deliciosa como suena. Sin grandes secretos: se tuesta un poco el pan y se riega con un chorrito de aceite de oliva. Se disponen sobre la tostada los tomates cherry y el aguacate cortados a rodajas, junto con la sardina sin espinas. Yo le añadí un poco de albahaca fresca para darle un toque perfumado y luego lo espolvoreé todo con pimienta negra recién molida. Fácil, fácil, fácil.

PLV Havoc says that the thing he searches for more than being labelled is to create excitement, to sow with his music a message that an audience can interpret as personal messages, and to serve only as a conductive tool. Now, leaving behind the folk music that took him by the hand in his original project, with Penny Lancaster, his latest album is inspired increasingly by his own musical experiences.

Pedro Gracia Pérez de Viñaspre, the man behind PLV, comes to visit next Thursday June 6th at the legendary venue Heliogàbal with Rafa Berrio, and I can only say that his music is a complete surrender to the senses, deeply vibrant, and will surely be one of the best live concerts you could hope for in a week where time seems like it is slowing to a stop as we approach the beginning of summer; with the fire of his guitar promising to prepare you for it.

PLV Havoc dice que lo que busca mas allá de ser etiquetado es lograr emocionar, sembrar con su música un mensaje donde el público interprete mensajes personales y que él sirva solo como herramienta conductora. Ahora, dejando atrás el folk que llevó de la mano en su proyecto original, con Penny Lancaster, su último disco, se acerca cada vez mas a la música de autor.

Pedro Gracia Pérez de Viñaspre, hombre detrás de PLV, viene a visitarnos el próximo Jueves 6 de Junio a la mítica sala Heliogàbal junto a Rafa Berrio, y solo os podemos decir que su música es una entrega total a los sentidos, profundamente vibrante, siendo uno de los mejores directos que podríamos desear para una semana donde el tiempo parece detenerse poco a poco a medida que nos acercamos a la entrada del verano; con el fuego de su guitarra promete prepararnos para ello.

We do love spreading the news about people who do beautiful things with their own hands that is why we are so happy that Lucía Vergara, the designer behind handmade jewelry brand Après Ski, has presented Twilight, her new collection. Just a couple of weeks ago she held the official launch of this new collection inspired by complementary opposites and by the aesthetic on mocha-ware ceramic -which dates from the 18th century.

The already iconic pastel shades of the brand are combined in here with geometric motifs and stronger shades like burgundy, ochres, black or deep blue. Together with lacquered wood and brass, ceramics become a primary material in here, too. The whole collection is already available in her online store.

Argi Hamrah didn’t want to miss the event and she has sent us these beautiful pictures so the ones that are far away would not miss it either.

Nos encanta contar novedades de la gente que hace cosas bonitas con sus propias manos por eso estamos encantados de que Lucía Vergara, diseñadora de la marca de joyería artesanal Après Ski, haya presentado Twilight, su nueva colección. Hace un par de semanas tuvo lugar la presentación oficial de esta nueva colección inspirada en los opuestos que se complementan y la estética de cerámica mocha-ware, originaria del s.XVIII.

Los característicos colores pastel de la marca se combinan ahora con motivos geométricos y tonos más intensos como granate, ocres, negro o azul marino. A la madera lacada y el latón se une además la cerámica como material protagonista. La colección ya está disponible en su tienda online.

Argi Hamrah no se quiso perder el evento y nos ha enviado estas preciosas fotos para que los que estamos lejos tampoco nos lo perdiéramos.

This has been a long weekend. Not that it has lasted till today, actually only Monday was holiday in here but, anyway, it has been a long weekend. Long and scattered with little chained catastrophes that filled the days -one after another- till the moment you find yourself wondering when did the week happened to start again without you not even seeing those three days go by. These things also happen to you, don’t they? Please say yes!

Jokes aside, as I said before, there were no more than little catastrophes perfectly solvable, those that actually make you laugh later -not a single laugh while they are happening, though- as the days go by. Among one calamity and the other, we decided to drive away and we finally managed to save our weekend with some delicious tacos in Laguna Beach and a nice stroll among flowers.

Ha sido un fin de semana largo. No es que haya durado hasta hoy, en realidad solo el lunes era festivo aquí pero, de todas formas, ha sido un fin de semana largo. Largo y sembrado de pequeñas catástrofes que se encadenan y que colman los días -uno tras otro- hasta que de pronto te preguntas en qué momento ha vuelto a empezar la semana, así, sin más, porque tú de los tres días festivos ni te has enterado. ¿También os pasa a vosotros esto, verdad? Por favor, ¡decidme que sí!

Bromas a parte, como dije antes, no fueron más que pequeñas catástrofes perfectamente solventables, de esas de las que te ríes después -en el momento no te ríes nada de nada-, según pasan los días. Entre un infortunio y otro, decidimos poner tierra de por medio y logramos que unos tacos en Laguna Beach y un paseo entre flores nos salvaran el fin de semana.

The other day one of my music-loving friends asked me which places I’d take Kevin Parker, leader of the band Tame Impala, if I were his guide during Primavera Sound. It was pretty clear that he wanted to test my knowledge of the city after living in Barcelona for so long.

Answering his question was also the most obvious way of starting a music recommendation, so I decided I had to offer the same advice I’d give all visitors and artists filling the city with musical vibes this week. After doing a little survey (and promising wine in exchange for information), I present below a list of unmissable treats for music lovers in Barcelona.

BOO - Not only for their clothes but musical expertise too – their taste in music is respected throughout the city.

Les Lunettes – To accompany your outfit, this designer glasses shop won’t let you go unnoticed.

Wah Wah – Excellent shop in the Raval, especially if you want to discover one of the best musical treasures in the city.

Barceló Raval Hotel - This is the place that will make you regret having stayed in a hostel or any random sofa. Its design rooms and incredible views of the city are unparalleled. A drink beside the pool on the terrace is a must!

La Cazalla – A bar that has been around for more than one hundred years, their hidden balcony is one of the best-kept secrets of the city.

Of course, the list of great places is endless and we should probably spend our time watching the musicians instead. My advice is as every year: let yourself get carried away by instinct, let the devil on your shoulder be your ally, and there’s nothing a little sunbathing on Barcelona’s beaches won’t cure.

So, Tame Impala – aside from the recommendations mentioned above, our friends Italians Do It Better will be here with Glass Candy their most personal and far out project to date. Just a little recommendation I’ll leave you with.

Rev your motors up and prepare to dance!

El otro día uno de esos amigos melómanos que tengo, me preguntaba a qué sitios llevaría a Kevin Parker, líder de la banda Tame Impala, si fuera su guía durante su estancia en el Primavera Sound. Obviamente ya daba por entendido que mi amigo quería probar mi conocimiento de la ciudad después de todos los años que llevo en Barcelona.

Casualmente, y ante el hecho de que la pregunta fuera la forma más concreta de poder comenzar una recomendación musical, he decidido que tenía que ofrecer la versión que yo daría a todos los visitantes y artistas que esta semana llenan la ciudad con su energía musical, así que luego de hacer un pequeño sondeo y de prometer vinos a cambio de la información, os presento a continuación una lista concreta de los imperdibles para estos días del festival:

BOO - No solo su ropa, dejaros aconsejar sobre sus sugerencias musicales, sus recomendaciones musicales son famosas en la ciudad.

Les Lunettes - Para acompañar el look una tienda de gafas de diseño que no te harán pasar desapercibido.

Wah Wah - La tienda por excelencia en el Raval si, de paso, quieres entrar a uno de los sitios mas fantásticos de tesoros musicales en la ciudad

Barceló Raval Hotel - Este es el sitio que te hará arrepentirte de haberte quedado en un hostal o en un sofá cualquiera, sus habitaciones de diseño y las increíbles vistas de la ciudad no tienen comparación. ¡Una copa al lado de la piscina en la terraza es un imperdible!

La Cazalla - Un lugar que lleva más de cien años ofreciendo desde su balcón uno de los mejores secretos de la ciudad.

Por supuesto hay una lista enormes de imperdibles, pero supongo que la lista es larguísima -además de todos los músicos que deberíamos ver en tres días- pero mi consejo como cada año: dejarse llevar por el instinto, en estos festivales es mejor que nuestro lado animal nos guíe. Y, al final, no hay nada que un buen baño de sol en las playas de Barcelona no cure.

Aparte de los mencionados arriba, Tame Impala, nuestros amigos de Italians Do It Better vienen con Glass Candy, su proyecto más personal y rebelde, recomendación que os dejo para arrancar motores y ¡prepararse para bailar!

I think the first time I saw something from Juniper Ridge might have been last year when I arrived to L.A. Some incense sticks on the supermarket caught my attention because the whole package and graphic image was too cool to be just ordinary incense sticks. Handmade drawings of plants illustrated their suggestive natural smells: cedar, piñón, sweetgrass, white sage…

After that, I started seeing them all around, in tradeshows like Coeur or in cool stores like Mohawk in Silver Lake, and by then it was clear: this was something interesting to follow. And so I did, I followed their Instagram and their Facebook page and discovered how they give shape to their fragrances through a completely natural process: no chemicals and no artificial smells. Quoting their own words: they go to the mountains, they harvest wild plants and they distill the fragrance. As simple, and as complicated, as this may sound.

Because of all the reasons mentioned above, I got really excited when I got a sample of their Big Sur Cabin Spray last week -thank you thank you! For those of you who don’t know, Big Sur is a region in California that you cross on your way from L.A. to San Francisco -or the other way round!- if you drive by the coast -as we did last September-. It is a beautiful wild place where mountains meet the sea. Big Sur is also a fresh breeze of pure air that smells like moss and earth, like bark and sap -like nature itself- and that I can now spray in my own living room.

Besides all the things I already knew from the brand, last Friday I also learnt that they donate 10% of their profits to different wilderness groups -which you can actually check on their website- and that they also take part, actively, in different activities preserving the environment.

Since it is clear that this house fragrance belongs to nature, I thought there would be no other better place in my house for taking the pictures than my little garden -well yeah, it actually is a little balcony but, hey, what if I like to call it garden…- so all the lush green you see around the package are my pepper and mint plants and my celery -I know, I am like a proud mamma, can’t help showing it off anytime I find the occasion!

Creo que la primera vez que vi algo de Juniper Ridge debió ser el año pasado al llegar a Los Ángeles. Unos palitos de incienso en el supermercado me llamaron la atención porque toda la imagen gráfica del envase parecía ser demasiado cool para tratarse de inciensos tradicionales. Unos dibujos a mano de plantas ilustraban sus sugestivos olores: cedro, piñón, sweetgrass, salvia blanca…

Después de eso creo que empecé a verlos en todas partes, en ferias como Coeur o en tiendas molonas como Mohawk en Silver Lake, y entonces lo tuve claro: podía ser interesante seguir esto de cerca. Y eso hice, empecé a seguirlos en Instagram y en Facebook y descubrí como dan forma a sus fragancias a través de procesos totalmente naurales: sin químicos ni olores artificiales. Citando sus propias palabras: van a las montañas, recolectan las plantas salvajes y destilan la fragancia. Tan simple, y a la vez tan complicado, como suena.

Por todas las razones mencionadas anteriormente me hizo especial ilusión recibir una muestra de su spray para cabaña Big Sur - ¡gracias, gracias! Para aquellos que no lo sepáis, Big Sur es una zona de California que se atraviesa en el camino de L.A. a San Francisco -o viceversa- si conduces por la costa -como hicimos nosotros el pasado Septiembre-. Es un sitio precioso, muy salvaje, donde las montañas se encuentran con el mar. Big Sur es también una fresca bocanada de aire puro que huele a musgo y a tierra, a corteza y a savia -como la naturaleza misma- y que ahora puedo rociar en mi propio salón.

Además de todas las cosas que ya conocía de la marca, el viernes descubrí también que donan el 10% de sus beneficios a diferentes organizaciones relacionadas con el mantenimiento del entorno -puedes descubrir cuales son en su propia web- y que ellos mismos toman parte activa en muchas de estas actividades.

Como esta claro que esta perfume de interior pertenece a la naturaleza creí que no había mejor lugar en mi casa que mi pequeño jardín para hacerle unas fotos -bueno, en realidad es un balconcito pero a mí me gusta llamarlo jardín, qué le vamos a hacer…- así que el frondoso verde que veis alrededor del paquete son mis pimenteras, hierbabuena y apio -ya sé, soy como una mamá orgullosa y ¡no puedo evitar presumir de él cada vez que tengo la ocasión!

Last Saturday we decided to go visiting Getty Center. Located on the top of a hill, the museum offers -besides great exhibitions and some really privileged views of the whole city of L.A.- free concerts in the open air once a month.

The other day we could enjoy Danish-band Quadron playing, which turned out to be a great discovering, here you have the video of one of their songs, Hey Love, and some pictures of the evening.

El sábado por la tarde fuimos de visita a Getty Center. Ubicado en lo alto de una colina, el museo ofrece -además de geniales exposiciones y unas vistas privilegiadas de toda la ciudad de Los Ángeles- conciertos gratuitos al aire libre una vez al mes.

El otro día actuaba el grupo danés Quadron que resultó ser un gran descubrimiento, aquí os dejo el vídeo de una de sus canciones, Hey Love, y unas fotos de lo que fue la tarde en Getty.
