Buena Vista Social Club – A Time to Remember

I began the week, without really knowing why, listening to some of my favourite songs by Buena Vista Social Club, and they’re quite a few, to be sincere. Thanks to the documentary Win Wenders released, in the late 90s’, I discovered the story behind this iconic Cuban band, although some of their songs sounded pretty familiar.
When we were living in Munich I even had the chance of attending one of their shows; for obvious reasons, the line-up was a little bit different from the original one since, unfortunately, people like Compay Segundo or Ibrahim Ferrer are not among us any longer. However, we were lucky enough to enjoy the presence of this amazing and charismatic woman that is Omara Portuondo (they are on their European tour right now, you can check the dates in here).
It is not the first time I feel like talking about Buena Vista in here; although, sometimes, I end up putting off ideas like this because I am not totally sure of how they can fit in IT Hunter. I mean, which is, actually, the trendy factor of a band that experienced its golden age during the 50s’ in Cuba and that sing, even today, songs that can easily date from the 30s’?
I sincerely believe that what makes this kind of music special is that it manages to survive the passing of time with more and more energy each time. When I hear it, it manages to move me in a way I can’t actually explain; but the thing is, after some time without listening to it, when I happen to hear it again it always surprises me, as the first time, how full of emotion and feelings it is. It was then when all my doubts disappeared. This emotive capacity definitively deserves to be remember! Don’t you see, my dear friends, that being moved will never be out of fashion?

Empecé esta semana, sin saber muy bien cómo, escuchando de nuevo algunas de mis canciones favoritas de Buena Vista Social Club, que son muchas, sinceramente. Gracias al documental que Wim Wenders presentó, a finales de los 90, descubrí la historia detrás de esta mítica formación cubana, aunque algunas de sus canciones ya las conocía anteriormente.
Cuando vivíamos en Múnich tuve, además, la oportunidad de asistir a uno de sus conciertos; obviamente la formación distaba un poco del reparto original ya que, lamentablemente, figuras como Compay Segundo o Ibrahim Ferrer fallecieron hace unos años. Sin embargo tuvimos la suerte de contar con la presencia de esta fantástica y carismática señora que es Omara Portuondo (ahora mismo se encuentran de gira por Europa, puedes consultar sus fechas, aquí).
No es la primera vez que había pensado hablar aquí de Buena Vista; a veces, sin embargo, acabo aparcando ideas de este estilo porque no estoy segura de cómo encajan dentro de IT Hunter. Quiero decir, ¿cuál es realmente el factor de tendencia de una formación que vivió su apogeo durante los años 50 en Cuba y que aún canta, a día de hoy, canciones que pueden estar fechadas incluso en los años 30?
Creo que, sencillamente, lo especial de este tipo de música es que sobrevive al paso de los años con más y más energía a medida que pasa el tiempo. La escucho y logra emocionarme de una manera que no puedo explicar; pero es que, después de pasar un tiempo sin oírla, cuando vuelve a sonar de nuevo siempre vuelve a sorprenderme, aún más cargada de sentimiento y emoción. Ha sido entonces cuando se han disipado todas mis dudas. ¡Por supuesto que algo con esta capacidad emotiva merece, sin duda, un lugar en la memoria! ¿No veis, queridos amigos, que emocionarse nunca pasa de moda?

Absolutamente de acuerdo contigo. La emoción es muy selectiva, no se deja conmover por cualquiera.
No creo que jamás hayan pensado en hacer música por motivos “empresariales”. Siempre lo han hecho por pasión y como además son buenos en lo que hacen e inteligentes han logrado casi mágicamente conmover y seguir conmoviendonos.
