Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century
Lots -lots- of years ago, it came into my hands a video about Naomi Campbell’s career; yes, it was so detailed it even talked about her bright incursions in other fields beside the modelling one; read, the literally and the musical ones. I saw it, I saw it more than once, I must confess, although in my defense I will also allegue than I was no more than fifteen years old by then.
What really caught my attention in the whole documentary was the portrait of the deep relationship Campbell had with Tunisian designer Azzedina Alaïa, who apparently took her in his home when she first arrived to Paris: “I call him Papa“, Naomi declared, after explaining how the designer had taken care of her as she was his own daughter. Testimonies like this justify Naomi’s indignation when she discovered that the exhibition Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion in the Metropolitan Museum of New York, organized by Anna Wintour, did not include a single garment by Alaïa.
These days, and till next May, Dutch Groninger museum pays homage to the designer’s work during the last ten years, under the name Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century.

Hace muchos, muchos años, llegó a mis manos un vídeo sobre la carrera de Naomi Campbell; sí, era tan completo que incluso hablaba de sus fulgurantes incursiones en otros campos más allá del modeleo; leánse, el literario y el musical. Lo vi, lo vi varias veces, debo confesar, aunque en mi defensa también alegaré que yo no tenía más de quince años.
Lo que más me llamó la atención del reportaje en sí fue el retrato de la entrañable relación que Campbell había tenido con el diseñador de origen tunecino Azzedine Alaïa, quien al parecer la acogió en su casa cuando ella llegó por primera vez a París: “Lo llamo Papá“, aseguraba Naomi, tras relatar como el diseñador se había encargado de cuidar de ella como si de su propia hija se tratara. Declaraciones como ésta justifican la indignación de Naomi al comprobar que en la exposición Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion en el Museo Metropolitan de Nueva York, organizada por Anna Wintour, no se incluía ninguna obra de Alaïa.
Actualmente, y hasta el próximo mes de Mayo, el museo holandés de Groninger rinde homenaje a la obra del diseñador durante los últimos diez años, bajo el título Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century.

I’ve been trying to find out as much as I can about Alaïa recently. His tenacity, disdain for the industry and sheer talent make him quite extraordinary. If only I could get to this exhibition.
