‘The Future’ by Miranda July
I discovered Miranda July -like so many other people in the world- with her film You and Me and all the ones we know, a real gem of the indie cinema that, around emotional surrealism and naïvety manages to weave a bittersweet veil that wraps the observer during the whole film. Or maybe, even a little bit longer.
After different incursions in several disciplines like literature, photography or contemporary art, versatile July goes back to cinema with The Future, a story where its mains characters Sophie and Jason are forced to face the fleetingness of time when they decide to adopt a sick cat. The poor thing becomes the narrator of the story when, in order to let the carpe diem rule their lives, Sophie decides that time has come to create her define piece of art and Jason, on the other hand, chooses to give himself to fate, letting divine signs guide his life.
A couple of months ago Miranda July was interview in Nowness where, a part from talking about the film, she also presented A Handy Tip for the Easily Distracted, a cut scene that was not include in the film finally but that seems the perfect idea for those who suffer from scattered attention. Like myself, for instance.

Descubrí a Miranda July -como tanta otra gente en el mundo- cuando se estrenó su película Tú, yo y todos los demás, una joya del cine independiente que a golpe de surrealismo e ingenuidad emocional consigue tejer un manto agridulce que envuelve al espectador durante todo el largometraje. Y quizás, incluso hasta un poco después.
Tras diferentes incursiones en variadas disciplinas como la literatura, la fotografía o el arte contemporáneo, la polifacética July vuelve al cine con The Future, una historia en la que sus protagonistas Sophie y Jason se ven forzados a enfrentarse a la fugacidad del tiempo cuando se plantean adoptar un gato enfermo. El pobre animal se convierte en narrador de la historia cuando, con el propósito de hacer suya la máxima del carpe diem, Sophie decide que ha llegado el momento de crear la que será su pieza artística definitiva y Jason elige, por el contrario, abandonarse al destino y dejar que sean las señales divinas las que guíen su vida.
Hace un par de meses entrevistaban a Miranda July en Nowness donde, además de comentar la película, daba a conocer A Handy Tip for the Easily Distracted, una escena recortada que al final no se ha incluido en la película pero que parece una idea perfecta para aquellos que padezcan de atención dispersa. Como yo, mismamente.

Una de mis películas favoritas es “You and Me and all the ones we know”. Me encanta lo que hace esta chica. Y The Future tiene muy buena pinta.
This is one film I’m seriously looking forward to seeing. I remember being so enchanted by You and Me and Everyone We Know – I’m still raving about it.
