Alice Springs is, actually, the pseudonym used by June Newton, Helmut Newton’s wife, to sign all her photographic works. After closing Sumo, the previous exhibition of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, there was the opening of the first international retrospective of June’s work, two weeks ago, and there she was herlself to explain us at first hand her beginnings in the photography scene and some more other anecdotes next to Helmut.
The retrospective, an spontaneous initiative of her assistant, represents an interesting journey through June’s career, from her beginnings taking making-of pictures at Helmut’s sessions to her later professional commissions totally on her own, being her portraits series, depicted over the last forty years, especially remarkable. Intimate and social, almost with an anthropological component, some of them have become quite iconic pieces of contemporary photography.

Alice Springs es en realidad el pseudónimo utilizado por June Newton, esposa de Helmut Newton, para firmar sus trabajos fotográficos. Tras la exposición Sumo que estaba teniendo lugar en la Helmut Newton Foundation de Berlín se inauguró hace un par de semanas la primera retrospectiva a nivel internacional del trabajo fotográfico de June, y ella misma estuvo allí para contarnos de primera mano sus inicios en el mundo de la fotografía y otras anécdotas junto a Helmut.
La retrospectiva, iniciativa espontánea de su asistente, supone un interesante recorrido por la trayectoria de June, desde sus primeras experiencias retratando los making-of de las sesiones de Helmut hasta los posteriores encargos profesionales de forma ya totalmente independiente, entre los que destacan especialmente todas sus series de retratos realizados durante los últimos cuarenta años. Íntimos y cercanos, casi con un componente antropológico, algunos de ellos se han convertido en verdaderas piezas icónicas de la fotografía contemporánea.
